Days Of Our Lives: Drake Hogestyn, who played John Black, has passed away

Days Of Our Lives (DOOL) fans were heartbroken last night, after learning that Drake Hogestyn has passed away.

Hogestyn, who portrayed John Black on the sudser, died at the age of 70 surrounded by his loved ones, the day before his 71st birthday, according to his family.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn,” the Hogestyn family said in a statement. “He was thrown the curveball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. We love him and we will miss him all the Days of our Lives.”

“Today, the world lost a great man, Salem lost its greatest hero, and I lost one of my favorite scene partners,” Martha Madison, who played Hogestyn’s onscreen daughter Belle Black, posted on Instagram.

“Drake was full of enthusiasm and humor and always told the most amazing stories. He loved being an actor and always showed grace and gratitude when it came to his work and his fans.”

Christopher Sean, who played John Black’s son Paul Narita, posted that Hogestyn was more than just his TV father. “In my eyes you were my dad,” he said. “The world lost a true Hero. Miss and love you so much Drake. Rest in Peace Dad.”

Fans also weighed in on the tragic loss. “John Black is one of those characters you thought would love forever,” one fan said. “John and Marlena are the forever couple. So sad about this.”

“Such heart breaking news. The show will not be the same without him,” another fan posted. “My deepest condolences to his family, friends and co workers. Thank you for the many years of entertainment.”

Hogestyn made his DOOL debut on January 24, 1986, after having portrayed several roles in primetime television, including Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. He leaves behind his wife Victoria and his children Ben, Rachael, Whitney and Alexandra and seven grandchildren.
